Merdeka Interview - Two Little Campers

The word “Merdeka” literally means “Independence”, “ Freedom” and “Sovereignty''. After 6 decades of independence, the word “Merdeka” carries different meanings that are unique to each Malaysian. In the run-up to this year’s Merdeka Day, we interviewed our fellow little campers and nature enthusiasts - Anas, Anaqi and parents from Two Little Campers, to find out their story and what Merdeka truly means to them.

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF

My name is Shafini and my husband's name is Syafiq. We have two children, Anaqi & Anas.

TELL US ABOUT WHEN AND HOW YOU DEVELOPED THE INTEREST IN CAMPING

We spent most of our days staying indoors during Malaysia’s PKP (or MCO, Movement Control Order) and we were not able to go anywhere during those times. It makes us crave for outdoor adventures, especially the kids. After the first camping experience with our newly bought tent, we instantly got hooked.

WHAT’S YOUR USUAL CAMPING ACTIVITIES? WHICH ARE YOUR FAVORITE AND WHY

We enjoy various camping activities such as swimming (in the sea or river, depending on the location), cooking and sitting around the bonfires. After setting down, Anas and Anaqi would find some pebbles and branches to play with or play in the puddle when it rains. We would encourage the kids to explore the nearby nature themselves as we think this would help develop their creativity.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR MOST UNFORGETTABLE UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE DURING YOUR CAMPING TRIP

So far we are blessed with all the sweet memories. For us, the beauty of camping with kids is that they will always find joy in nature. The camping trip may be tiring, but it is definitely well worth it.

WHAT DOES MERDEKA MEAN TO YOU

In our opinion, Merdeka means we are free to make our own decisions regardless of other’s opinions. We should live our life to the fullest, in our own way
